Numbers game |
Ata had something Scheduled for today. On arrival, she could not find the people she was supposed to meet. After some searching, she started making phone calls.
On the third call, she tracked someone down.
"I am here," said Ata, "Where are you?"
"We had to cancel," said the someone. "I couldn't get through on your mobile, so I sent you an SMS."
"Okay," said Ata - who's mobile had been off until she turned it on to make these particular calls. "Talk to you later to reschedule. Seeya."
On arrival at home (feeling a little disgruntled about Disorganised People who Don't Know What They're Doing - and still not having received a text message), Ata had a sudden nasty feeling. She went straight to the computer and checked - and, sure enough, her CV has the wrong mobile phone number on it. All the other contact details are correct, but the mobile number has one digit wrong - it says 773 instead of 774.
This, of course, makes one think of how many people one has given one's CV to. Three? Four? Could be five or six. Of course, everyone else has called on Ata's home number, or emailed, or - occasionally - returned mobile calls to the number Ata called them from. Which the Someone today could have done, but evidently did not. This is somewhat fortunate for Ata, as she has now been prompted to discover the mistake - before further embarrassment could occur. There is the one or two that haven't called... is this because they had the wrong number? Or just because they didn't call?
Ata called the wrong number to experiment. It rang once, then went to an engaged signal. So at least a Person does not pick up and complain about getting calls for Ata. Unlike the last time Ata put a wrong number on a CV, as she had recently moved house and the new number was not firmly implanted when she wrote the CV up. When Ata finally called a prospective employer to query the status of her application, the prospective employer was both relieved and annoyed.
"I have been trying to call you!" she said. "But I just keep getting a woman named Rosa who insists you don't live there!"
Human. Ata is only human. |
