On The Bus |
Ata was very late for work this morning. She did not sleep well, and when she woke up - leaden and exhausted, to the tune of the nutter down the street having a screaming fit at someone (how do you come up with enough obscenities and energy to shout at someone for 45 minutes straight before breakfast?) - she thought, screw it, I might as well just tell them I'll be late and take my time getting ready for work. She was one hour and fifteen minutes late, but it was worth it to get up slowly and have a decent breakfast and a relaxed cup of coffee.
Catching the bus after nine in the morning means one misses peak hour commutation (if you get my drift), making for a much more comfortable bus ride. By the time the bus reached Ata's stop, there were not many people left on it... so when one woman's phone rang, everyone heard it. Her ringtone was two rings, followed by Homer Simpson: "I don't like this any more than you do, but your phone's ringing."
It made Ata smile. She peeked a glimpse up at the woman's seatmate, who was also trying to smother a grin. Ata and the seatmate caught gazes and had a little giggle over the ringtone... which set off the woman behind us, who had been trying very hard not to laugh. Ata looked around the bus, and noted that nearly all the remaining bus occupants were smiling or giggling. The owner of the phone looked out the window while she chatted away, apparently oblivious to the sniggering around her.
And to think Ata could have leapt out of bed and rushed to work breakfastless and haggard. It was a much better idea to be just that much later... they only pay her for the hours she works anyway, so no-one throws a fit over infrequent lateness. |

The nutter down the street is a tool of the universe, put there to ensure that you got on that bus and not some boring and ordinary one.
